Love should conquer all, shouldn’t it?

Last Saturday I went to see “Fat Pig”, written by Neil LaBute, at the Wharf Theatre

Tom meets Helen. Helen is a librarian; she’s good-natured, funny, sharp as a tack and full of life. Helen seems just what Tom needs. Tom seems just what Helen wants.
But Helen wears a “larger size”. She is, as someone brutally puts it, a ‘fat pig’.
Love should be able to transcend mere appearances – especially in this day and age. But Tom arrives at work one day to find Helen’s photograph doing the email rounds, and his peers aren’t backward in their barbed observations about Tom’s new girlfriend.
Can Tom put aside all the cruelty and sarcasm of his colleagues, ex-lovers and friends and follow his heart? Or will the pettiness of a world that judges by surfaces triumph again?

I really like the actor who plays Helen, Katrina Milosevic. I wish they had dressed her in something a bit nicer, though. Just because you are big, doesn’t mean you have no dress sense. I won’t spoil the ending. Suffice it to say that it was probably the most logical ending considering the influence Tom’s “friends” had on him and his inability to see what a nasty person his so-called best friend really was. Anyway, it was an interesting play – well worth seeing.

The next play I’m going to see is “Woman in Mind” by Alan Ayckbourn.

Fairies

OK, this is new for me, so I want to post again, even though I don’t have much to say. It’s the last day of the October school holidays today, which means I have to go back to work on Monday. How did two weeks slip by so fast? It’s Chloe’s birthday today and I gave her a book by “Daisy Meadows” with the first 7 fairy books in hard cover version. The little girls at school all seem fascinated by what Amber the Orange Fairy and Fern the Green Fairy are doing. It certainly is encouraging them to read. There has been a bit of controversy about the author lately. Apparently the books are written by various authors, all using the name Daisy Meadows. I really don’t think it’s that important.

I think I’ve finally worked out the time zone correctly. My last post was actually made on Friday 13th October (not Saturday!), so if this one is dated correctly it should be Friday 13th October at 6:17pm. Here goes!

Kings?

Well, I did see a king today! I took my Goddaughter, Chloe, to the theatre at Marian Street to see “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “Sleeping Beauty”. It was aimed at children from 3 to 10 years old. Chloe will be seven tomorrow, so it was about right for her. Unfortunately, there were lots of younger kids there, too, and they got a bit restless. It was hard to hear the actors sometimes during the second play because of babies and little kids making too much noise!
